Regional Queensland was the most attractive destination for Australians to move to in 2022, a new report says. The Regional Movers Index has shown the Sunshine Coast was top of the list for internal migration last year, followed by the Gold Coast. Greater Geelong in Victoria followed by Queensland's Fraser Coast and Bundaberg regions received the third, fourth and fifth largest net migration inflows, respectively. Bundaberg and the Fraser Coast also proved the most popular areas for people to relocate to from other regions, with Bundaberg seeing an increase of 46.4 per cent in the final quarter of last year, while the Fraser Coast recorded a 3.8 per cent increase over the whole of 2022. Young families fuel rural renaissance as inland migration boosts regional towns, data shows

Image
Morgan Williams believes he struck gold when he and his young family packed up their beachfront home in Perth and moved 100 kilometres inland to York.  Whereas it was once the discovery of actual gold deposits nearby that lured people to Western Australia's oldest inland town, now it's riches of another kind that are behind the town's population influx — good jobs, an enviable country lifestyle, and affordable housing. It's a trend occurring all around the country, as a growing number of Australians move further inland and further away from coastal capital cities, according to the latest official snapshot of regional migration.  Read More: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-03-01/rural-towns-population-boom-fuelled-by-inland-migration/102033520

Gold Coast real estate data shows unit prices rising at faster rate than houses

Image
Gold Coast unit prices have reached a "fresh price peak", with a year-on-year increase of 10.32 per cent, while overall falls in the housing price market have "lost momentum".  New data from the PropTrack Home Price Index shows home prices in Australia bounced in February across most markets, including the Gold Coast, after rapid price falls in recent months.  PropTrack senior economist Eleanor Creagh said market conditions shifted very quickly last year with substantial interest rate tightening and home prices falling in most parts of the country. Tropical cyclone frequency in Queensland will decrease but become more severe, reports predict

Image
The frequency of tropical cyclones in Queensland is likely to decrease but the weather events that do arrive could be more severe, according to two new government reports. The Geosciences Australia report into wind hazards considered the risk and impact of thunderstorms, cyclones and tropical cyclones (TC) in the state's south-east. A second report conducted by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) evaluated future cyclone risk and found climate change would influence the frequency, intensity and behaviour of tropical cyclones. One report found it is "more likely than not that the frequency of TC activity in the Queensland region will decline into the future, though the change of frequency in TCs in south-east Queensland specifically remains uncertain". Blanket ban on mobile phones in schools disadvantages students, education expert says

"We need to move towards teaching students how to effectively and appropriately use the technology because of all the advantages that can be gained from them," he said. Queensland public school principals have the freedom to decide mobile phone policy, ranging from a blanket ban to full classroom access. Queensland builders call for delay to construction code changes for accessibility, energy efficiency

Image
Builders have called on the Queensland government to delay new housing regulations to ease pressure on the industry as it deals with widespread labour shortages.  Industry figures say the time it takes to build a new home in Queensland has doubled, in some cases, since the outbreak of the pandemic. They say there is no simple solution to the construction challenges, which have been prompted by labour shortages, increased demand, and high material costs. Master Builders Queensland chief executive Paul Bidwell says the organisation has called on the state government to postpone new regulations that will standardise accessibility provisions and energy efficiency requirements for new homes.
